NGUYEN NGUYEN-VANG-PHUC, 2009

Ho Chi Minh City, November 20, 2009

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Nhu-Phong Nguyen, Head of Industrial Systems Engineering Department of University of Technology at Ho Chi Minh City. It’s my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for NGUYEN NGUYEN-VANG-PHUC, one of my best students and colleagues, to apply for the PhD program at School of Computing, Informatics and Decision Systems Engineering, Arizona State University. I have known Mr. Nguyen for almost 10 years during which I was his instructor at first and employer later.

As my student in various courses, Mr. Nguyen demonstrated an extensive academic background, an ability to catch complicated concepts, great teamwork skills and fulfilled many assignments with high quality and considerable striving. His studying group, in which all the members lived in harmony and worked well together, was one of the best groups I have ever instructed. As a result, his achievements at my university were so distinctive. From what I knew, he was ranked as the second best undergraduate student when he graduated and won two silver medals granted by Ministry of Vietnam Education and Vietnam Invention Foundation of Technology for his research.

As an instructor, Mr. Nguyen handles his tasks very well, takes his teaching responsibilities very seriously. He knows how to inspire his students by creating different approaches to the lecture. As I have seen, in the course Facility Layout & Location Design, he encouraged his students to finish their project by making real layout samples from readily found materials. Likewise, he designed some new teamwork-like games which were generalized into simple principles from the lectures. The atmosphere of the class which I witnessed when students presented their works was so lively, but what is more important, he truly enjoys teaching and proves his indispensable wonderful inclination to it.

As a faculty who has worked in our department research group, Mr. Nguyen plays a key role in some research projects with striking characteristics as a creative problem solver. He also demonstrated particular strengths in careful attention to details, innovation and willingness to go beyond what is required. I remembered a research project named “The application of simulation to solve traffic congestion in Ho Chi Minh City” five years ago before Mr. Nguyen entered. We found a difficulty to find formulas describing the level of vehicles trapped in the congestion area and spent a lot of hours to try figuring out the best solution. Mr. Nguyen came and provided the solution based on modified formulas integrated from what formulas we already knew. This job required discerning the solution from an amount of material thoroughly and Mr. Nguyen demonstrated how to master it.

I must mention Nguyen’s leadership skills as well as interpersonal skills. He was the President of Youth Union - Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Moreover, he has taken the main part of organizing the traditional activities of our department such as farewell party, welcome party for new students, Industrial Systems Engineering department’s birthday and has been the person who initially instituted the Industrial Systems Engineering Alumni Association at our university. In addition, he involved in extra-curricular activities during his school years such as the Green Summer Volunteer Campaign or the University English Club. I firmly believe that these activities helped Mr. Nguyen to become an even well-rounded student.

A couple of weeks ago, Mr. Nguyen has been granted the VEF scholarship (Vietnam Education Foundation) which is sponsored by the U.S. Congress and its selection process is very competitive. Mr. Nguyen has worked very hard to win the scholarship, so I believe he certainly deserves it.

Taking all of above reasons into account, I evaluate Nguyen as a person with high potential to carry out an advanced study in the field of Industrial Engineering and strongly recommend him for further education at School of Computing, Informatics and Decision Systems Engineering, Arizona State University. If you have any inquiries regarding Mr. Nguyen's capability, I am more than happy to assist you.

Sincerely yours,

Nhu-Phong Nguyen, Senior Lecturer

PHAN THI MAI HA, 2010

Ho Chi Minh City, March 12th,, 2010

To Whom It May Concern,

Dear Sir or Madam,

Ms. Phan Thi Mai Ha has requested me to write a reference letter for her to apply to the Doctor Program of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. I am very pleased to do so for I know her very well. I have worked with her in 9 year.

During the time of working with her, Ms. Ha has always intrigued me with her ability of quick perception of new ideas and using them in future, as well her intelligence and capacity for working hard. She is always willing to pitch in to help colleagues, and she gets the job done right the first time.  She is efficient in planning projects, punctual in meeting deadlines, and conscientiously adheres to the department standards and guidelines. Besides, Ms. Ha has proved herself as a capable colleague in both teaching and doing research. She is an enthusiastic and dedicated member with reliable work habits in some my department’s science research topics.

It came as a wonderful surprise last year when Ms Ha announced her intention to return to school for his PhD degree. Knowing Ms Ha, I am sure he has exhibited the same enthusiasm for her graduate studies as her did with us. She has recently applied a full scholarship of Taiwan Government in the year 2010. It was a real honor to witness Ms Ha’s development here at the university and it has been a joy to watch her growth since then I cannot imagine a better recipient of this scholarship. I enthusiastically recommend her to you. Feel free to contact me if you require further information.

TRAN NGOC VINH QUANG, 2011

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, July 28th 2011

To Whom It May Concern

Ref: Mr. Tran Ngoc Vinh Quang

As Head of Industrial System Engineering Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Bach Khoa University), I’m definitely glad to recommend my student Tran Ngoc Vinh Quang, as a prospective student, to a graduate program in Construction Management at your university.

During the course of attending the class, regarding his ability, he was of endless enthusiasm and endeavour. He had always done his best to build up and develop my lectures with many intriguing ideas. Moreover, he was of discipline and had a serious attitude toward his studying. Before the class, he always finished all homework assigned and was well-prepared for my lecture, so in the class, he was initiative to perceive the lecture.

Besides, he is also an active and dynamic person. From my understanding of this person, he joined many activities organized by our faculty and by our university. He took part in organizing Anniversary Ceremonies and Welcome and Farewell parties. Moreover, though getting no prize, he contributed a good design in competition in designing the logo for our department. Moreover, he was the captain of the class’ football team and the soul of the football team, making great efforts to lead the team to the semi-final match.

In relation to responsibility, he played a key role in my class. When he was staffed as the key position in charge of duplicating the materials for all the members in his class, all the years in university, he had never failed the mission. Thanks to his responsibility, the members had enough materials in time to prepare and to study during the course of attending the class.

As far as his contribution to the school is concerned, since his graduation from the school in 2009, while working for his company, he has been giving a lot of contributions to my department. It’s he who set up a concrete link between my department and his company. Within 2 years from 2009, a lot of my students have been assigned to his company for internship and simultaneously we have done several projects for his company such as 5S. Therefore, I put a high value on his contributions and works so far and believe he will completely make an excellent engineering graduate.

With all of his ability and qualities mentioned and my experience as a Head of Industrial System Engineering Department, I undoubtedly believe that he will be apparently qualified to work on the program he is supposed to pursue at your university. He definitely deserves to a place in your university.

Please feel free to contact me if I may be of any further assistance.

Sincerely yours,

HO THI PHUONG DUNG, 2012

Nguyen Nhu Phong, M.Eng, Senior Lecturer                                Head of Department of Industrial Systems Engineering

Ho Chi Minh University of Technology

Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City

10th April 2012

To: Postgraduate Scholarships Program - University of Westminster

As the Head of Department of Industrial Systems Engineering, Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, I proudly wish to recommend Ms. Ho Thi Phuong Dung for Postgraduate Scholarship- Vietnam Scholarship under University of Westminster. Ms. Dung would be an excellent choice for the scholarship you are offering. I have known Ms. Dung quite well for 6 years in my capacity as her lecturer and manager so I have the confidence to recommend her to you without reservation.

First of all, as her lecturer, I see that Ms. Dung is one of my best students. She stood out of the crowd not only by her hard-working attitude toward studying but also by her keenness for learning. Her achievement of GPA 8.29 was very good at the university where most lecturers rarely gave out a score of 9. Out of a class of nearly 100 students, she graduated with honors in the top 3. To her credit, she has won many scholarships in academics from organizations such as Intel Vietnam Co, Ltd., The Sunflower Mission … during her studying.

A second aspect of my experience with Ms. Dung leading me to consider her as special and impressive young girl is the breadth of her community involvement. She has participated in various extra-curricular activities. I see her at many events, conferences as a volunteer. She also joins voluntary campaigns such as Green Summer Campaign … to help poor people – this is a very famous campaign in Vietnam.

I am so impressive by her achievements that I could not turn down my decision to ask her to have a deep thought to be a lecturer assistant at my department after her graduation. I know that in Vietnam, it is not a good choice to become a young lecturer if you are not in well-to-do family. She is the main labor for three-member family including her mother in ill health and a little brother. Her father passed away when she was a first year student.   I know that she must do many extra part-time jobs such as a tutor for primary and secondary pupils, a collaborator for many companies and projects… to be able to support her family. Her financial problems sometimes make me think that they would deter her enthusiasm and motivation. Until now, I do admire her determination. Ms. Dung has a professional working manner and high sense of responsibility. She has a gift of teaching. She always makes others feel satisfied by what she has done.

With what she has proved, I believe that higher learning is where a mind like hers belongs. Once again, her decision about the course to pursuit for her higher education consolidates my belief to her more. She had a wise choice. To Industrial Systems Engineering, supply chain management is an important area but in fact, we still lack the lecturers with this research orientation. In addition, most of the lecturers of my department tend to focus on the engineering side and leaves a big hole for the management aspect. During her work, she also asks me about this field and she seems very keen on it. I believe that she will succeed with this choice.

I actually feel happy to know that your university gives such valuable scholarships like Vietnam Scholarship to help brilliant and financial-needed student. Ms. Dung cannot afford your program without a full scholarship. I have no doubt that, with further education, there is limit to what Ms. Dung will be capable of doing. You would be helping a most deserving candidate.

For these reasons, I feel strongly that supporting Ms. Dung through this scholarship. I have every confidence that she will bring honor and esteem to both you and us. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Nguyen Nhu Phong

TRAN TRUNG HIEU, 2013

March 03, 2013

Kent Business School

University of Kent

Canterbury Campus

Kent, United Kingdom

To whom it may concern,

I am writing this letter in support of Tran Trung Hieu’s application to Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Facility Location and Logistics at University of Kent, United Kingdom.

First of all, I had the pleasure of meeting Tran Trung Hieu in Semester 2 (AY 2001-2002) as he studied the course of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT), Vietnam. Later on, I also taught him in other some core courses, such as Operations Research 2: Stochastic Models, Quality Control, and Material and Inventory Management. In the period of his studying, I recognize that Trung Hieu is a hard-working, innovative and smart student. He solved several difficult optimization problems in a simple but efficient way that other students or even lecturers did not also think of it. This also explains why he always is one of top-grade students in the classes in which I taught. With the emerged achievements obtained in studying, he was conferred Silver medal for excellent graduated students. Therefore, he was recruited to be Lecturer in my ISE department, HCMUT. In the role of a junior lecturer, he was assigned to be Teaching Assistant in some courses in which I taught. Besides that, he also participated in several research projects at the ISE department. From that, I have more opportunities to understand clearly about the excellent research capability of the candidate. He proposed many creative and innovative ideas to deal with real-world problems which are encountered in the projects, which helps find out efficient solution methods to solve other challenging problems in industry.

After he resigned to study PhD at National University of Singapore (NUS), we together still continue to contact and discuss about research topics and projects. I am really impressive with research initiatives and results which he did in PhD studying process as well as in the period of time when he works as Research Fellow at NUS. He has published some research papers on planning and scheduling, and optimization methods in leading journals. In my capacity as Senior Lecturer, and Head of Department at the ISE department in HCMUT as well, I have known and worked with this candidate for over 10 years. He is really one of the best students and excellent researchers (i.e., top 5% in HCMUT) in the field of modelling and optimization who I have worked with.

In summary, I have no doubt that Tran Trung Hieu will do well and get success in the Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Facility Location and Logistics at your university. With his passion, excellent modelling and optimization capability, and very good programming skills, I believe that he is deserving of your job offer, and an asset in the position he gets involved in. I would like to ask that you give a serious consideration to his application.

Yours sincerely,

LY HA – HOANG, 2016

Ho Chi Minh City, March,12, 2016

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

To whom it may concern,

It is my pleasure to write this recommendation letter for Ms. Ly Ha - Hoang’s application for the Fulbright Vietnamese Student Program offered by the U.S. Government.

I have known Ly Ha - Hoang for nine years since she studied Bachelor Degree at The University of Technology - Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City where I have been working as a full-time lecturer. During the semesters when I formally taught Ly Ha - Hoang, I qualified her as an outstanding student basing on her curiosity, intelligence and quick integration to new subjects. My students were always assigned adverse topics with strict deadlines, which required them to be self-taught and able to study seriously under time pressure to stick to the schedule; and Ly Ha - Hoang always fulfilled her assignments with high marks. In addition, I recognized she was an effective communicator in her group, who acted as a reconciler when conflicts happened in the teamwork; her optimism put her at ease in any circumstances. Many positive comments and evaluations were given to her from my colleagues who also taught her or instructed her to do projects.

Additionally, I realized that she had a passion for the subject Project Management accompanied by a project work, which were the important requirements in her field of study; and obviously she got successful outcomes. With her capacity, she used to be a credible student since she carried responsibilities beyond what might be expected of a person at her age. I was impressed when her final thesis was the study on “Applying Fuzzy theories to evaluate commercial projects’ feasibility which required extensive knowledge in Mathematics and Computer programming. As her research advisor in the study, I did know that Fuzzy theory was not taught at level of Bachelor degree. Therefore, it required excessive volume of work to cover the knowledge which was necessary for the study. Thanks to her hardworking, the final thesis was finally evaluated very well. Thus, she is an example of a citizen who is committed to academics and quietly self-driven not only to succeed but to be unique also.

For those reasons, I would like to recommend Ms. Ly Ha - Hoang as a candidate for your program without any hesitation. I believe she will further advance her understandings in area of Project Management and gain more valuable experiences in practices. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about her.

Sincerely yours,

TRAN VO THI THANH HUYEN, 2018

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

Dear Kanden System Solutions Fund,

My name is Nguyen Nhu Phong, Former Head of Industrial Systems Engineering Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Bach Khoa University). Ms. Tran Vo Thi Thanh Huyen has asked me to write a letter of recommendation to accompany her application for a scholarship of your company – the Kanden System Solutions 2018 scholarship. I am very pleased to do so.

As a senior lecturer, I have taught Thanh Huyen for nearly 3 years in some core courses such as: Quality Management and Control, Manufacturing Resource Planning, The Warehouse and Inventory Management, Enterprise Resource Planning, … and served as her thesis advisor the senior year, so I got to know her very well during this time.

In the period of Thanh Huyen’s studying, I qualified her as an intelligent, creative and hardworking student who grasped new concepts quickly and always did her best to build up my lectures. Thanh Huyen has the ability to communicate her ideas clearly. When she had a concern or question about an assignment, she spoke her mind directly, giving voice to what others might feel but could not or would not say. Furthermore, she also impressed me with her English skills. She was one of my most outstanding students who took the initiative to deliver all the report presentations entirely in English yet made it in a lively, flexible and interesting way.

Besides, her scientific research was especially impressive. She produced an extraordinary yearlong research paper on an investigation of Material Requirement Planning (MRP) for a generator manufacturing company. The purpose of which is to determine the product structure and the inventory status of dependent materials to create an appropriate MRP plan that meet the master production schedule. During her thesis and research process, I met her frequently to assign responsibilities and she was always willing to accept constructive criticism and instruction concerning her work. She impressed me with her ability to meet deadlines with excellent results.

According to my understanding of her, outside of the classroom, she is an enthusiastic and dynamic girl who always takes an active role in various activities organized by our department and by our university. Thanh Huyen was chosen as the vice monitor of her class and she played a very important role in organizing many activities for our department such as: the 18th Anniversary Ceremonies, Advising education enrollment program, Welcome and Farewell parties, … She distinguished herself as a talented, caring, intuitive and dedicated team player. She always supported her peers throughout all these activities. Her caring nature and personality allow her to

work well with others in a team setting, as she always respects others' opinions even when they differ from her own. Thanh Huyen has also been a strong event management leader in our university's English club (UTEC), eager to share her experiences with others and learn new skills.

It is satisfying to be able to give her my highest recommendation for Kanden System Solutions 2018 scholarship, without reservation. Thanh Huyen is truly a stand-out individual who will impress everyone she meets. I hope this information proves helpful. Please send e-mail or call me if you have further questions.

Yours sincerely,
